  • Why Use hinge tools
Specialized hinge tools are essential for fabricators requiring accurate and complex rolled edges or hinge knuckles on sheet metal parts, such as those used for electrical cabinets or access doors. Traditional multi-stage bending often results in inconsistent diameter and poor alignment. Hinge dies achieve the complete 180° or greater roll in a single press brake setup (often using a combination of forming stages within the die itself). This ensures exceptional dimensional accuracy, a smooth mating surface, and a strong, integrated hinge structure, saving time and guaranteeing part quality.

    Selecting the Right Hinge Tooling
Selecting the correct hinge tooling depends primarily on the required hinge diameter, material thickness, and the material type. Ensure the die's forming radius and the corresponding punch geometry perfectly match your desired hinge size and clearance. For varying material thicknesses, choose a modular or adjustable hinge tool, if available, to maintain consistent performance. Always verify the maximum bending tonnage required for the specific tool and material to prevent press brake overloading. Prioritize high-grade tool steel for long tool life when forming high-strength materials.

    Air bending force
Required press force at 90° air bending, force in ton/mtr.

The charts below give the appropriate tonnage to air bend mild steel.

    Bending force for other metals:
Soft aluminium Tons per unit length x 50%
Aluminium alloys heat treated Tons per unit length x 100%
Stainless Tons per unit length x 150%
