Press Brake Tooling FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about press brake tooling: punch and die types, choosing the right tools, machine compatibility, customization, delivery time and maintenance.

Press Brake Tooling Basics

What is press brake tooling?

Press brake tooling refers to the punches and dies installed on the upper and lower beam of a press brake to bend sheet metal into specific angles and shapes. The punch presses the sheet into the die, and the tool shape, together with the die V-opening, determines the bend angle and radius.

What are press brake tools used for?

Press brake tools are used to shape metal sheets and plates into various angles and curves on a bending machine.

What types of press brake punches and dies are there?

Common punches include straight (standard), gooseneck, acute and radius punches. Common dies include single V-dies, multi-V dies, acute dies and radius dies. The right combination depends on your part geometry, material and bend sequence.

Choosing Press Brake Tooling & Compatibility

How do I choose the right press brake tooling?

Start with your machine: confirm its clamping system and the available tool height. Then choose the die V-opening for your material and thickness, and a punch that fits the part shape, for example a gooseneck punch for parts with returns. Send us your drawing, material and machine details and we will help you select suitable tooling.

What V-opening should I use for press brake dies?

As a general rule of thumb for mild steel, the V-opening is about 6–8 times the material thickness. A wider opening needs less force and gives a larger inside radius, while a narrower opening gives a tighter radius but needs more force. For stainless steel, thick plate or tight radii, ask us to confirm the right size.

What are the main press brake tooling styles, and are they interchangeable?

Common systems include American precision style (0.500-inch tang), European precision style (13 mm tang) and WILA/TRUMPF style (20 mm tang with grooves). They use different clamping interfaces and are generally not interchangeable without adapters. Fabmax offers TRUMPF®/WILA® style tooling; tell us your machine brand and model and we will confirm compatibility.

What types of bending machines are compatible with your press brake tools?

Our press brake tools are compatible with a wide range of bending machines, including hydraulic press brakes, mechanical press brakes and CNC press brakes.

Ordering, Customization & Delivery

How do I get the most suitable press brake tools and the best price?

Please tell us what you need: the size or dimensions, your drawing, the material you will be bending, the raw material you prefer for the tool, and any other requirements. The more details you send, the faster we can recommend the right tool and quote.

Can you customize press brake tools or design a punch or die from my drawing?

Yes. We can customize press brake tools to your requirements, including the size, shape and bending angle. Please send us the drawing of your workpiece, details of the bending machine you use, the required raw material and any other information.

How long is your delivery time for press brake tools?

Generally, delivery takes 3 days if the goods are in stock, and 15–45 days if they are not in stock, depending on the quantity. For custom tools, production time depends on the complexity of the design and the manufacturing process.

Maintenance & Support

How do I maintain press brake tools?

To ensure the longevity of your press brake tools, we recommend regular cleaning and inspection for any signs of wear or damage. It is also important to store the tools in a dry, clean and safe environment when not in use.

How long can press brake tooling last?

The lifespan of press brake tools depends on how often they are used, the quality of the materials, and the care and maintenance they receive. Well-maintained press brake tools can last for many years.

What should I do if my press brake tool breaks or becomes damaged?

Please stop using it immediately and contact us for assistance. Trying to repair the tool yourself can be dangerous and may cause further damage.
